Bring family and friends to the water for an evening of boating. Each evening you will be introduced to a different type of boat to explore Back Creek and the waters around Annapolis at sunset. The fleet includes sailboats, powerboats, canoes and kayaks. Guides will point out historical, maritime and environmental landmarks. Boating skills and safety will be emphasized. No experience necessary.

This is an introductory, week-long camp for youngsters aged 6 to 12. Campers will explore Back Creek and the waters around Annapolis while learning boating skills. The fleet consists of small sailboats, powerboats, canoes and kayaks. Games and journeys will be incorporated into the week-long themes to make boating, boating safety, and bay awareness a fun experience. Themes are:

*Indians of Back Creek Week – July 11-15
*Stewards of the Bay Week (environmental education) – Aug 8-12

Back Creek Nature Park Boating Center
The Spirit of America Camp trains campers to become safe boaters in different types of boats. They will learn basic boating skills and take the Maryland Boater License Course, with a certification test administered at the end of the week. This hands-on curriculum includes boating terms, weather conditions, navigation, right-of-way rules and rescue techniques while motor boating, canoeing, kayaking and sailing. No boating experience necessary.

If you have been on a powerboat or a sailboat as a passenger and didn’t know what was going on, this course will help demystify the sport. One session focuses on powerboats, the other on larger sailboats. Instructors will have you steer, practice man-overboard drills, analyze weather conditions, dock the boats and review nautical rules of the road.
FISHING AND CRABBING DAY (adaptive)

How do watermen catch fish and crabs? During this day you will go fishing and crabbing at the mouth of the Severn River. At the end of the day we’ll steam the crabs and fry the fish. We’ll focus on trotlining for blue crabs and bottom-fishing for white perch, spot and the occasional rockfish or blue. No boating experience necessary.
